Q & A
Getting to know me a little...
Q: Why did you choose a career in science?
A: I have always been attracted to the investigative nature of science and how it leads to new discoveries. This is the reason why I decided to pursue a doctorate degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, an area of study concerned with the discovery and development of new therapies for the treatment of disease.
Q: Is there a particular aspect of your work that you enjoy the most?
A: I enjoy all aspects of my work. But I am particularly fond of sharing my work with the scientific community in the form of talks and poster presentations. This love for presentations stems from my vocation for teaching.
Q: What is your greatest professional achievement?
A: This one is easy. Obtaining my Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Q: How would your boss and co-workers describe you?
A: Hopefully in a positive manner. I always try to make myself available for assistance and advise, so they would probably describe me as generous with my time and helpful.
Q: What type of work environment do you prefer?
A: I thrive in a cohesive work environment where collaborations and team work are encouraged.
Q: How do you deal with pressure or stressful situations?
A: Very well. In fact, I work well under pressure. I frequently give myself deadlines in order to accomplish tasks in a timely manner.
Q: What do you like to do outside of work?
A: In addition to being a scientist, I am also a husband and a father, and I therefore try very hard to maintain a work-life balance. Besides playing dress-up with my daughter and piggyback with my son, however, I also enjoy photography and genealogy.
Q: What are your career plans after your post-doc?
A: I am in the process of negotiating a promotion to an Instructorship position at UAB, which will allow me to continue doing groundbreaking research in my current lab, train and mentor students, and also give lectures in order to strengthen my teaching experience. UPDATE (Mar '16): I am now an Instructor and enjoying every minute of it!
